Crop the photograph to the outside edge of the card. Then move the green guides to the inside printed frame or artwork boundary. The tool normalizes the opposite borders into percentages.

CENTERING KNOWLEDGE

Understand the border.
Understand the grade.

Centering compares the visible borders around the printed card design. Equal borders produce a 50/50 result; increasing imbalance moves the ratio toward values such as 60/40 or 70/30.

Centering percentage examples
VISUAL EXAMPLES

Compare 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20.

The larger number represents the wider border in the measured pair. A 60/40 result means one side contributes 60 percent of the combined border width and the opposite side 40 percent.

Left and right centering measurement
LEFT / RIGHT

Measure opposite borders as one pair.

Add both border widths, then divide each individual border by that combined value.

THE FORMULA

From millimetres to percentages.

A left border of 3 mm and a right border of 2 mm have a combined width of 5 mm. The result is 3 ÷ 5 = 60% on the left and 2 ÷ 5 = 40% on the right.

border ÷ combined borders × 100 The same calculation is used for top and bottom.
Front L/R · Front T/B · Back L/R · Back T/B The limiting or less balanced pair is used as the side result.
RATIO REFERENCE

Line-count percentages

The table follows the same ratio logic as the printed centering reference. Green entries indicate 60/40 or better.

Card side 10 9 8 7
Front guide 60/40 65/35 70/30 75/25
Back guide 75/25 90/10 90/10 90/10

MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS

Measure both directions on the front and back.

A card can be well centered left-to-right but less centered top-to-bottom. Both directions matter.

  • Front: compare the left border with the right border.
  • Front: compare the top border with the bottom border.
  • Back: repeat the left/right measurement.
  • Back: repeat the top/bottom measurement.

PRINTED REFERENCE

Odd and even guide lines convert to percentages.

Use the reference as a quick visual aid, then confirm the result with precise border placement in the tool.

  • Solid guide lines represent odd line counts.
  • Dashed guide lines represent even line counts.
  • Bold values indicate a 60/40 result or better.
